Newbury SAC invited to Mortimer Life Boat Dedication

17th July 2005

Newbury SAC has supported many Charities over the last 25 years, but two that have always been close it is heart are the DDRC and the RNLI.  A number of events in between 2002 and 2004 lead to a sizable donation being made to the Mortimer Branch of the RNLI which were raising money to place a second boat at Teddington Lock on the River Thames.

This is a key point of safety for river users in the area as it allows for one boat to operate on each side of the lock and therefore cut out the time it would take to transfer a boat through or round the lock during an emergency.  The RNLI have only recently moved to cover the river Thames; this extension of area was one of the key recommendations of the inquiry into the Marchioness disaster in 1989.

As a contributor to the new Lifeboat at Teddington Newbury SAC was invited to send a representative to the launch and dedication of that new boat.  The Diving Officer, Derek Wright and his family attended for Newbury SAC. after the service they were treated to rescue demonstration and then a buffet lunch put on by Mortimer Branch.
