'Bonfire n’ Bangers' Newbury SAC celebrates 400 years since Guy Fawkes

The annual Bonfire has become the major event centred on children in the Newbury SAC calendar.   Hosted at a member’s smallholding we build the biggest bonfire in the county if not the country!  Simon starts building it a month beforehand then other members start turning up with burnable rubbish and before long it’s so big that it needs some complicated farm machinery to put anything on the top and it’s so dense that a JCB can be parked on top of it!

The best butcher in Newbury town centre (Griffins) supplies sausages, a local baker supplies bread and a local farmer supplies potatoes.  Add a hundredweight of chopped onions a couple of gallons of soup and a chilli sauce our Ex Diving Officer makes (his revenge) and we have a barbecue which would win the admiration of the celebrity chefs who are moving into the area.  No party is complete without a few drinks so we club together for a barrel of beer from one of the excellent local breweries.

Guy Fawkes Night is all about fireworks!   Over half the entrance money is spent on fireworks; as with the food Newbury SAC are not content with the average, no ‘nipping to the newsagent for a box’  these are ordered from Pains Fireworks near Salisbury who supply Highclere Castle, Swanage Carnival and many other venues with their displays.  They supply us with 50kg of explosive to light up the sky, when they were collected this year we were told that they were the best rockets ever – and we agree!

Newbury SAC Photo Clique were set the challenge of recording the event for posterity.  These guys usually take photos underwater and it didn’t even rain!  Take a look at the other photos and see what you think.
